What is a tooth filling?

A filling is an effective way to restore a tooth damaged by decay. At dental clinic Nova Smile in Litomyšl, our dentist first removes the decayed tissue, thoroughly cleans the cavity, and then fills it with a special material. This restores the tooth’s shape and function and protects it from further destruction by preventing bacterial invasion. We use various materials for fillings: tooth-colored composite, porcelain, and metal amalgam. In addition to traditional options, we also offer glass ionomer cements for small cavities and nanocomposites for maximum strength and natural appearance.

Which filling material to choose?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer — the right choice depends on your needs and the condition of your tooth. At Nova Smile, dental clinic in the Pardubice region, we consider the extent of the damage, possible allergies, tooth location, and budget. Here are the main options:

  • Amalgam Fillings. Strong and affordable, but their dark color makes them noticeable. We do not recommend them for front teeth

  • Composite Fillings. Ideal for aesthetics — they are matched to your natural tooth color and placed directly into the cavity, where they harden. However, for larger fillings, they may be less durable (lasting 3–10 years), and prone to chipping or staining from coffee or tea

  • Porcelain Inlays. Highly stain-resistant and similar in appearance to natural teeth. They usually cover more of the tooth and are priced similarly to gold

  • Glass Ionomer Cements. These release fluoride, helping to strengthen the tooth and prevent recurrent decay. Best suited for small cavities or children’s teeth, but not strong enough for large restorations

  • Nanocomposites. An advanced version of composite materials with improved strength and aesthetics. Thanks to nanotechnology, they last longer (up to 10–15 years) and maintain color better

If the tooth is badly damaged, we may recommend a crown. If the nerve is affected, root canal treatment (nerve removal) or pulp protection (nerve preservation) may be necessary. We are gradually phasing out amalgam in favor of more eco-friendly composite and porcelain materials.

How do you know if you need a filling?
